The Copan Mayan Archaeological Site was designated as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site in 1980. It was the first such site in Guatemala and is currently only one of two in the country. For tourists visiting the site, there is the Copan Sculpture Museum on the site, which opened in 1996.Copán Ruinas, or simply just Copán, is the name of a town and Maya ruin site in Western Honduras. The Maya ruins are one of my favourites in all of Latin America because they are well preserved and in a stunning location full of Macaws (the parrots). To top it off, Copán doesn’t get anywhere near as busy as places like Chichen Itza.Road tripping through the western part of the country not only offers a glimpse of Honduras ’ lush mountainous terrain, but also into the lives of a people often kept at arm's length. Highways CA-5 and CA-11 are your yellow-brick road and extend as far south as the capital city of Tegucigalpa and way out west to the Copán Ruins.The ruins are about 1.5km from Copan Parque Central (there is a stone path on the left side of the road, heading towards the ruins which makes it a bit safer to walk), in the direction of La Entrada/Santa Rosa/San Pedro Sula, so if you want to save time you can walk or take a tuk-tuk to the park entrance, spend a few hours at the ruins, then pick up …
