Yet the cave's discoverers (J.M. Chauvet and two companions) stated that they left the cave in exactly the same condition as they found it (Chauvet et al., 1995). J.M. Chauvet had, in fact, been recruited many years earlier by J. Combier, then director of the Service d’Archéologie Rhône-Alpes, to work for the preservation of the Ardèche caves.
