You strive towards the transformation throughout the whole game and then, in the end, this big moment just makes you lose character power. He comes back every time you camp, just like an Animal Companion. Same for undead party members btw. The lack of ability to rez undead DOES become an issue later though if you go with a Lich companion party. There are places likely to kill a party member where you cannot rest.
